Baked Mini Powdered Donuts

Powdered DonutsThis morning I had a strange craving for powdered donuts. Now, I usually eat pretty healthy for breakfast in the mornings, but maybe because today is Sunday I felt like doing something different. Actually, these mini donuts are baked, so they have a lot less calories than the donuts fried in oil. These mini powdered donuts remind me of the Hostess Donettes from childhood! They go great with coffee, and I love that I can eat a few of them without feeling sick afterwards. The last few times I have bought something sweet at Starbucks in the mornings I have sworn not to do it anymore because I feel so bad after.

I decided to start doing “Sunday Funday” on my blog every Sunday. Some of you are probably thinking something totally different from what I mean by Sunday Funday (remember Sunday Funday in college?), but I don’t mean that one! Every Sunday I want to make something fun to share – here are some examples of what you might see: Hot Cocoa Pancakes, Peanut Butter Cup Cupcakes, Nutella Whoopie Pies. I eat healthy all week long except for my occasional dessert binges (last night at a friend’s going away party I had red velvet cake with cheesecake frosting :X), and sometimes you will see them on here. Today this happened to be these powdered sugar donuts!

I hope you are having a nice weekend! It always go by so fast, and now I have a lot of work to do. Tomorrow I may have to give a presentation, so I will be preparing for that the rest of the day. Now I just need to disconnect my internet so I don’t go on Pinterest/Instagram/FoodGawker the rest of the day! Bahhh they are so addicting!

Baked Mini Powdered Donuts

Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp plain yogurt
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Powdered sugar
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Whisk together all dry ingredients in a medium bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, oil, yogurt and milk well with a fork.
  4. Pour liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix with a teaspoon until combined.
  5. Grease the mini donut pan and fill each form half full.
  6. Bake for about 10 minutes, checking if done by touching the top with your fingertip (it should be firm and spring back).
  7. Let cool 5 minutes, then carefully remove the donuts from the pan and place on a wire cooling rack.
  8. Coat once each with powdered sugar, then let cool 30 minutes.
  9. Coat a second time by rolling each donut in powdered sugar and shaking of the excess.
  10. Store in an airtight container.

    How nice. No yeast, no waiting for the dough to rise but instant satisfaction for Sunday Funday. I have never made donuts as I am concerned about my self control and having a batch of these on site. I think I am changing my mind on this whole matter. Have a fun Sunday. BAM

    This recipe didn’t turn out so well for me. It wasn’t very sweet, I would add 1/4 more sugar into the flour mixture. Also, the donuts did not rise very well. Would it be ok to incorporate yeast into this recipe? Thanks for sharing!

      Hi Alison!

      Thanks for your comment. I tend to make my recipes with the least amount of sugar possible, sorry about that! Just add a bit more next time. As far as rising goes, I have never had a problem with that. Make sure your baking powder is fresh, and yes you can add yeast next time, it will just take longer since you have to wait 1-2 hours for the dough to rise. I would try adding 1 tsp yeast per batch (24 donuts). This is 1/2 packet if you are using yeast packets! Hope that helps 🙂

    I’d love to know- Where did you purchase your mini-donut pan? Thank you for the recipe. I am planning to make these for my son’s 30th birthday. He is vegan, so do you have an idea for a substitute for the eggs other than the powdered egg-substitute? Thanks

      That is a tricky one… I think the eggs make it more cakey, so it might take some experimenting – applesauce or bananas will help with the texture (maybe 2 tbsp per egg?), but you may need to add some more baking powder or baking soda to get a good rising effect without the eggs. Sorry I can’t be more helpful on this, I have not tried making them without eggs before – let me know if you try it!

    I tried this recipe and found that the amount of sugar is perfect for us. It turned out very tasty (I added a tbsp of cinammon).
    As I don’t have a donut pan I used a freezer bag to form rings of dough on a baking sheet (I cut the tip to press the dough through). Unfortunately the dough spread and lost the form and I got big flat cookies 🙂 but they are delicious 🙂 🙂

    I’ve lived in the United States until I was 8 and 4 months ago I went back on a short business trip. When I tried powdered donuts it was like a taste from my childhood and I just loved it. While the people with me were telling me how super sweet the donuts were, I was eating it like a child! I hope this recipe works. I’m gonna try it very very soon 🙂

    I am not much for baking so I am confused. Step 4 add wet ingredients. step 3 mix eggs oil vogurt together. Is step 4 the milk? You did not specify milk anywhere so I omitted, Donuts heavy, bland taste.

      Hi Gayle! I am so sorry for the confusion – I just updated the recipe to include when to add the milk, that was my fault for not being more clear. You definitely need to add the milk, so I am sorry again!
